Has anyone else been barraged by emails, solicitations, articles, or questions about how you are going to react to The Da Vinci Code?
It seems like I am constantly confronted with this encroaching cloud that has been forecasted to relentlessly rain down the historical facts and subsequently destroy the foundations of Christianity. Well here we are, the movie is out, the book is out…and you know what? Christ is still Lord. God is still sovereign. God will not be sacked by Hollywood.
Some people within the Christian community seem to think about the church of Jesus Christ as if it is a political administration or something. That we have to somehow mitigate the “bad-press” so as to preserve “our faith”. As if God will somehow be removed from his throne because of poor approval ratings. C’mon!! The world killed his son! No one had a worse approval rating than King Jesus!!
We serve a sovereign God who, by the way, is never surprised or caught off guard, and who knows about The Da Vinci Code…and better yet, he may just be bringing it to the doorstep of the evangelical community to test and prove discernment. What better exercise for a believer than to have to dig in and articulate to unbelievers why the Bible is the word of God and why Jesus Christ is the Savior.
This excitement could serve as a providential wind to detach those whose faith is in themselves and their ability to preserve and protect Almighty God. It is a great time to remind ourselves that our faith is in God. Our hope and dependence actually rests in God. And less anyone needs to be reminded; he can take care of himself!
It doesn’t matter what arguments and opposition sprouts in the coming days and years, it will not defeat the supremacy of God and the authenticity and authority of his word. God is simply not giving his enemies better arguments than he has! Consider what Proverbs says:
Proverbs 21:30 There is no wisdom and no understanding And no counsel against the LORD.
So as a Bible believing, Christ following, truth defending man or woman living stand firm, dig in and defend. This is a great time to refresh yourself as to why you believe what you believe and how you know the Bible is the word of God. As you do this remember that God is sovereign and he just may be using this to help conform you into the image of his son, even revealing areas in your life that need to be addressed and dealt with.
I am curious though how many, particularly within the church, will go and see the movie. The reviews are pretty unfavorable so far, but we’ll see.
Enjoy the weekend, walking in grace, remembering that God is sovereign while reminding your heart, as the Psalmist did:
Psalm 93:5 Your testimonies are fully confirmed; Holiness befits Your house, O LORD, forevermore.
