Quick note on John 5.19

21 07 2006

Joh 5:19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.

Jesus endured such hostility from sinners. It is interesting and ironic that the very point of Jesus doing this stuff, receiving this resistance, and ultimately having to defend himself is because he is living in the place of sinners, Christ is the example, he is living in dependence putting on humanity for the purpose of redeeming sinners from their independence from God.

Ironically, the very ones who accused him were themselves guilty of thinking and acting independently of God. So too, you and I, when we sin, when we choose to value our own wishes, traditions, preferences, lusts, desires, appetites over what God desires we show the fractured nature of our own dependence upon God. However, when we live in Christ, walk in Christ, follow Christ, we see the Son saying “whatever the Father does, these things the Son does in like manner” and we say, Yes, Jesus, yes Savior, that is how it is done!!

You and I then depend, trust and submit to the Father, praying for strength and resolve.

What a Savior….!!

Two illustrations really hit home yesterday:

Running toward or away from God. Powerful!
God’s name being taken in vain vs. that of one’s wife. Stinging.

And way to push for enchiladas and salsa with the slight pause and glance toward one unfortunate soul sitting in the front row.

Nice scramble back to church in time for the message by the way. Did you set any new land-speed records?

I don’t know if I set any records, but you know what I think I got the heart rate up a bit…arriving at the church 5 minutes before go time was crazy…

I love the picture of us not storming heaven but hell, and then God reaching out as only he can to do to rescue sinners from themselves.

We went to Romeo’s last night and overwhelmed with the poor service and good food…

The music set was stella last night with you and Innis. Dude was giving the nightclub feel…way to close with the old hymn.

I hope to have the notes online tomorrow am…//erik

Um, what did you just say you cool cat. Did that mean you liked the hymn? Hope you didn’t mind my saying it, but I thought it fit really well with your text. I spend the afternoon thinking about what hymn might be complimentary to the passage.

You and Chris worked well together as he played and drummed on the guitar. And the closing traditional hymn was well set up and sung. That’s all.

Are you still walking on at Nebraska this year?
