Quick note on John 5.19

21 07 2006

Joh 5:19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.

Jesus endured such hostility from sinners. It is interesting and ironic that the very point of Jesus doing this stuff, receiving this resistance, and ultimately having to defend himself is because he is living in the place of sinners, Christ is the example, he is living in dependence putting on humanity for the purpose of redeeming sinners from their independence from God.

Ironically, the very ones who accused him were themselves guilty of thinking and acting independently of God. So too, you and I, when we sin, when we choose to value our own wishes, traditions, preferences, lusts, desires, appetites over what God desires we show the fractured nature of our own dependence upon God. However, when we live in Christ, walk in Christ, follow Christ, we see the Son saying “whatever the Father does, these things the Son does in like manner” and we say, Yes, Jesus, yes Savior, that is how it is done!!

You and I then depend, trust and submit to the Father, praying for strength and resolve.

What a Savior….!!
